Outsider Minds

February 17, 2018 @ 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm

DATE CHANGE! Due a death in the speaker’s family, we are moving this event to our February program. We apologize for the inconvenience and extend our deepest condolences to Dr. Earls and her family. We look forward to her presentation next month.

• What we’ll do
Outsider Minds: The molecular origins of diversity in the human brain and how diverse minds navigate modern society

The human brain is genetically pre-programed for diversity. The result of this is a highly variable population consisting of individuals with a broad range of gifts and adversities. This presentation will discuss what neuroscience currently understands about how diversity arises in the human brain, why diversity is advantageous for our population, and our society’s successes and failures at supporting individuals on the outskirts of the intellectual and creative spectra.

Beginning in January, we will now offer up to 30 minutes of social time after our program question and answer period for interaction with the speaker, audience members and the NOSHA board. Our speaker will be Laurie R Earls, Ph.D., who is an Assistant Professor of Cell and Molecular Biology at the Tulane Brain Institute. Her research interests include molecular pathways influencing neural plasticity with age, and how this results in vulnerability to psychiatric disease, miRNA modification of calcium signaling in neuronal presynaptic function, and novel micro-peptides in normal brain function and disease.
