SUMMARY:Heretics Brunch - June
DESCRIPTION:We haven't had a chance to have one of our legendary brunches in a long time\, so we're long overdue! Santa Fe offers a friendly atmosphere and a delicious menu on Sundays. We've been well-served as a group in the past\, so we should go back where it all started. \n• Important to knowPlease keep us up to date on your attendance by using the RSVP function as soon as your plans change. It's very helpful for us to know how many folks are joining us\, not just for the restaurant seating\, but for the folks on the waiting list. We check the RSVPs right up until the last minute\, and it's never too late to exercise good manners and let us know if you're not joining us\, so we can get on with the eating! (Nothing sadder than a group of hungry folks at a table\, trying to figure out if they should wait for someone who isn't coming...)

SUMMARY:To a More Perfect Union: U.S. v. Windsor
DESCRIPTION:"To A More Perfect Union: U.S. v Windsor" is a feature-length documentary that tells a story of love\, marriage and a fight for equality. The film chronicles unlikely heroes -- octogenarian Edie Windsor and her attorney\, Roberta Kaplan\, on their quest for justice: Edie had been forced to pay a huge estate tax bill upon the death of her spouse because the federal government denied federal benefits to same-sex couples – and Edie’s spouse was a woman. \nDeeply offended by this lack of recognition of her more than forty-year relationship with the love of her life\, Edie decided to sue the United States government – and won. Windsor and Kaplan’s legal and personal journeys are told in their own words\, and through interviews with others of the legal team\, movement activists\, legal analysts\, well-known supporters and opponents. Beyond the story of this pivotal case in the marriage equality movement and the stories behind it\, the film also tells the story of our journey as a people\, as a culture\, and as citizens with equal rights. \nTickets are $15 per person. You can buy yours online here: https://tinyurl.com/y7ujr7pg

SUMMARY:Podcaster Thomas Smith Discusses "The Hard Work of Humanism"
DESCRIPTION:Podcaster Thomas Smith will be our guest speaker for May! \nHe will address humanism versus atheism\, what he's observed as the differences and how we might try to recruit more humanists. \nThomas Smith is a professional podcaster who began his career in 2010 when he set out to read the entire Bible from an atheist perspective in podcast form. In the beginning\, the Bible was hilarious and entertaining\, but it quickly turned into an incredibly tedious\, confusing\, and most of all - boring - endeavor. Nevertheless\, Thomas persisted. He eventually finished that project in 2016\, but not before launching a few other podcasts that are now his focus and living. \n"Serious Inquiries Only" features discussions on news\, politics\, philosophy\, science and skepticism. "Opening Arguments" is a tremendously popular legal podcast with partner and Harvard Law talkin' guy Andrew Torrez which seeks to explain the complex legal issues of the day in an accessible and accurate way. Andrew provides the cold hard facts and Thomas provides the comic relief. Hopefully. \nIf not for "Opening Arguments"\, Thomas is probably most well known for doing his best to counter bigots of all kinds onstage and on the internets. \nHe lives in Sacramento\, California and became a new dad in 2017. SUMMARY:Join NOAF for the Annual Game-a-Thon 2018!
DESCRIPTION:** Why a Game-a-Thon? \nNationally\, Abortion Funds gather in April to compete in bowl-a-thons\, but New Orleans Abortion Fund was turned away from the popular local bowling alley because they would not support this cause. Undeterred\, they got creative and instead brought this fierce competition and thirst for reproductive justice to Shamrock for a beer/ping-pong\, billiards\, darts\, and games tournament. Of course\, there will be costumes and prizes! \n** What do I have to do? \nPlayers who have raised $30 or more will get a tournament gamecard to play! Or you can form a team with 3 (or more) people and set a team goal. \nRegister and/or donate here -- https://bowl.nnaf.org/team/165226 \n** Why should I join? \nNOAF clients need you! Since they began making pledges in April 2013\, NOAF has assisted over 1\,000 people from throughout the Gulf Coast in accessing abortion care. Because of generous support from foundations for their overhead costs\, 100% of Game-a-Thon donations goes to their clients. \nYour voice can help bring down abortion stigma! Many of us have walked for a cause or raced for the cure. Playing for choice\, talking to our friends and family about the need for abortion funds\, and raising awareness about the restrictions facing patients is a powerful way to bring about change. \nIt's a ton of fun! Games\, food\, drink tickets\, prizes\, and more!

SUMMARY:What’s Up with Gravity? Weight\, Weight! Don’t tell me!
DESCRIPTION:For 250 years the concept of gravity was so simple: a young Isaac had shown that an apple falls from a tree for the same reason that the Moon orbits the Earth. Then\, a young Albert replaced that simple idea with curved “space-time“. Since then\, we have had to deal with E=mc^2\, parallel universes\, and black holes! Gravity plays an important role in the births and deaths of stars\, the creation of elements\, and even the production of sunlight. In this presentation to the general public\, we will explore these ideas and talk about LIGO\, a different kind of observatory here in Louisiana. LIGO has recently detected ripples in the spacetime continuum caused by collisions of massive stars in outer space\, just as Einstein predicted. \nPatrick Lestrade\, retired professor of physics at Mississippi State University Department of Physics and Astronomy and former NOSHA board member\, will be our speaker on this stimulating scientific topic!

SUMMARY:Last Supper Dinner Club - April
DESCRIPTION:Join us in April as we return to old favorite Zea's on Veterans! They offer a menu for everyone and friendly service to boot. They seem to have the "group thing" down to a science. Ribs? Yep. Hummus? Yep. Grilled fish? Sure. Salads that are actually tasty? Yep. Four kinds of rotisserie chicken? Uh-huh. If you don't like the menu\, they'll happily make something up for you\, but we bet you can find something. \n• Important to knowPlease keep us up to date on your ability to make the dinner by using the RSVP function as soon as your plans change.

SUMMARY:FREE SCREENING - Primer
DESCRIPTION:IMPORTANT NOTE: This film is promoted by Shotgun Cinema and will not have a NOSHA host. We are promoting it because it is FREE and may be of interest to some of you. To find out more\, please feel free to contact the venue directly at (504) 948-9998 or info@marignyoperahouse.org \nThis event\, timed to the National Evening of Science on Screen\, parallels screenings in 25 states of STEM-related movies. It's followed by a discussion with Tulane University physicist Lev Kaplan\, who will give an introduction to chaos and nonlinearity. \nMade for $7\,000\, Primer is about two budding tech entrepreneurs who accidentally create a time travel device that can be used for very short-scale time travel (think "a few hours\," not "a few centuries.") What follows in the days after their discovery is a complex\, increasingly chaotic mashup of timelines\, duplicate selves and ethical problems; the movie itself becomes a riveting temporal puzzle-box that rewards investigation and multiple viewings. \n(Or\, there are some helpful cheat sheets online to check out AFTER the event here: http://www.sparknotes.com/mindhut/2013/06/20/primer-understanding-the-most-complicated-sci-fi-movie-ever-made.) \n77 minutes \nTo read more about the film: https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/primer

SUMMARY:Inherit The Wind -- Classic Movies at The Prytania
DESCRIPTION:• What we'll doHaven't ever seen this classic? Now you can! \nThe Evolution vs. Creationism argument is at the center of the Jerome Lawrence-Robert E. Lee Broadway play Inherit the Wind. Lawrence and Lee's inspiration was the 1925 "Monkey Trial\," in which Tennessee schoolteacher John Scopes was arrested for teaching Darwin's theory of evolution in violation of state law. Scopes deliberately courted arrest to challenge what he and his supporters saw as an unjust law\, and the trial became a national cause when The Baltimore Sun\, represented by the famed (and atheistic) journalist H. L. Mencken\, hired attorney Clarence Darrow to defend Scopes. The prosecuting attorney was crusading politician William Jennings Bryan\, once a serious contender for the Presidency\, now a relic of a past era. \nWhile Bryan won the case as expected\, he and his fundamentalist backers were held up to public ridicule by the cagey Darrow. In both the play and film versions of Inherit the Wind\, the names and places are changed\, but the basic chronology was retained\, along with most of the original court transcripts. John Scopes becomes Bertram Cates (Dick York); Clarence Darrow is Henry Drummond (Spencer Tracy); William Jennings Bryan is Matthew Harrison Brady (Fredric March); and H. L. Mencken is E. K. Hornbeck (Gene Kelly). Dayton\, Tennessee is transformed into Hillsboro -- or\, as the relentlessly cynical Hornbeck characterizes it\, "Heavenly Hillsboro." \n128 minutes -- Drama \nYou can read more here:https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/1010555_inherit_the_wind?

SUMMARY:Can we derive a secular spirituality from the seasons?
DESCRIPTION:As we look forward to the vernal equinox (the first day of Spring)\, Bart Everson will engage in a community discussion on the question\, “Can we derive a secular spirituality from the seasons?” Everson’s book\, "Spinning in Place"\, outlines a this-worldly approach to spirituality for the scientifically-minded. “As a longtime atheist\, I’m skeptical of many expressions of religiosity\,” Everson writes. “But over the years I’ve learned to see much of value in religion as well. To be fully human\, we must be open to the full range of human experience. I wrote this book to show one way that humanists\, atheists\, agnostics\, freethinkers and skeptics might celebrate what it means to be alive here on this planet. Further\, by placing a focus on the natural world\, we can learn to be better citizens of the Earth.” \nEverson is known in the New Orleans area for his role in kickstarting the Lafitte Greenway\, a 2.5 mile rail-trail which connects neighborhoods in the heart of the city. His first full-length book\, "Spinning in Place" focuses on a series of seasonal celebrations which include the solstices\, the equinoxes\, and the lesser-known “cross-quarter days.” Taken together\, they form eight holidays spaced evenly throughout the year and have served as a principle focus of Neo-Pagan spiritual practice. \nIt’s “a clear and thought-provoking guide to the festival year” according to James Nichol\, author of "Contemplative Druidry: People\, Practice and Potential"\, who calls the book “highly recommended.” \nBart Everson is a writer\, an artist\, an activist\, a teacher\, a baker of bread\, a husband and a father. His formative years were in Indiana and northern Sweden\, and he has lived in New Orleans since 1999. He writes a column for Mid-City Messenger and Humanistic Paganism. SUMMARY:Outsider Minds
DESCRIPTION:DATE CHANGE! Due a death in the speaker's family\, we are moving this event to our February program. We apologize for the inconvenience and extend our deepest condolences to Dr. Earls and her family. We look forward to her presentation next month. \n• What we'll doOutsider Minds: The molecular origins of diversity in the human brain and how diverse minds navigate modern society \nThe human brain is genetically pre-programed for diversity. The result of this is a highly variable population consisting of individuals with a broad range of gifts and adversities. This presentation will discuss what neuroscience currently understands about how diversity arises in the human brain\, why diversity is advantageous for our population\, and our society’s successes and failures at supporting individuals on the outskirts of the intellectual and creative spectra. \nBeginning in January\, we will now offer up to 30 minutes of social time after our program question and answer period for interaction with the speaker\, audience members and the NOSHA board. Our speaker will be Laurie R Earls\, Ph.D.\, who is an Assistant Professor of Cell and Molecular Biology at the Tulane Brain Institute. Her research interests include molecular pathways influencing neural plasticity with age\, and how this results in vulnerability to psychiatric disease\, miRNA modification of calcium signaling in neuronal presynaptic function\, and novel micro-peptides in normal brain function and disease. \n• What to bring \n• Important to knowPlease note that we are now starting our programs at 2:30pm\, 30 minutes earlier than in 2017!
