DESCRIPTION:UNITY of Greater New Orleans is a nonprofit organization leading a collaborative of over 60 agencies providing housing and services to people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness in Orleans and Jefferson parishes. Their mission is to coordinate community partnerships to prevent\, reduce\, and end homelessness. \nJoe Heeren- Mueller will be speaking to us on the history of UNITY. He will touch on the growth and accomplishments over the years and will give a brief summary of their service structure and programs\, specifically with the Warehouse Program. He will discuss the successes and challenges of housing veterans\, families and chronic individuals in our community. \nAnd if you would like to contribute\, please bring one or two non-perishable food items for our monthly donation to Second Harvest Food Bank!

SUMMARY:The Future of Atheist Activism
DESCRIPTION:We're excited to have Jim Helton in town to talk to us about being activists! Helton is the National Field Organizer for American Atheists. After attending the 2012 Reason Rally\, he co-founded the Tri-State Freethinkers and was appointed American Atheists’ Kentucky State Director. Under his leadership\, Tri-State Freethinkers adopted the highway in front of the Creation Museum and Ark Encounter and led a protest that received international attention. \nHe played a key role in eliminating Gideon’s bible distributions in public schools and removing abstinence-only sex education. \nMr. Helton’s activism at the Creation Museum and Ark Encounter landed him appearances in the 2017 documentary film Bill Nye: Science Guy and the forthcoming documentary We Believe in Dinosaurs. He has been quoted in countless news outlets\, including "The New York Times"\, "Miami Herald"\, and "Washington Post". He is a fixture in local Cincinnati media and has given interviews for international television specials in France\, Switzerland\, and elsewhere. \nAs National Field Organizer\, Mr. Helton works with affiliates\, local partners\, and state directors to challenge religious privilege and fight to protect church/state separation at the local level by building coalitions around specific issue campaigns\, including medically accurate sex education\, LGBT non-discrimination ordinances\, and religious exemptions.

Then\, a young Albert replaced that simple idea with curved “space-time“. Since then\, we have had to deal with E=mc^2\, parallel universes\, and black holes! Gravity plays an important role in the births and deaths of stars\, the creation of elements\, and even the production of sunlight. In this presentation to the general public\, we will explore these ideas and talk about LIGO\, a different kind of observatory here in Louisiana. LIGO has recently detected ripples in the spacetime continuum caused by collisions of massive stars in outer space\, just as Einstein predicted. \nPatrick Lestrade\, retired professor of physics at Mississippi State University Department of Physics and Astronomy and former NOSHA board member\, will be our speaker on this stimulating scientific topic!

Lawrence and Lee's inspiration was the 1925 "Monkey Trial\," in which Tennessee schoolteacher John Scopes was arrested for teaching Darwin's theory of evolution in violation of state law. Scopes deliberately courted arrest to challenge what he and his supporters saw as an unjust law\, and the trial became a national cause when The Baltimore Sun\, represented by the famed (and atheistic) journalist H. L. Mencken\, hired attorney Clarence Darrow to defend Scopes. The prosecuting attorney was crusading politician William Jennings Bryan\, once a serious contender for the Presidency\, now a relic of a past era. \nWhile Bryan won the case as expected\, he and his fundamentalist backers were held up to public ridicule by the cagey Darrow. In both the play and film versions of Inherit the Wind\, the names and places are changed\, but the basic chronology was retained\, along with most of the original court transcripts.
