SUMMARY:Sunday Freethinkers Fika - Join Us in November
DESCRIPTION:"Fika"\, a valued social institution in Sweden\, means taking a regular break to enjoy refreshments with your friends or colleagues. We have added this experience to NOSHA! \nFrom the book 'The Art of the Swedish Coffee Break': "Functioning as both a verb and a noun\, the concept of fika is simple. It is the moment that you take a break often with a cup of coffee\, but alternatively with tea\, and find a baked good to pair with it. You can do it alone\, you can do it with friends. You can do it at home\, in a park or at work. SUMMARY:Religion\, Immigration\, and the Rise of Right-Wing Populism
DESCRIPTION:Fidel Azazi will discuss contemporary immigration in the West from Muslim-majority countries and the dramatic cultural shift contributing to a major change in Europe and the United States. Such change has paved the way for right-wing populism to dominate the political landscape. \nAzazi is a Lebanese social and political activist who has worked with the International Organization for Migration under the Humanitarian Admission Program for resettlement between 2013 and 2015. Then\, he served as a protection officer at Oxfam Great Britain until 2017 providing social safety interventionist programs to refugees. By mid-2017\, he was assigned to a ten-month emergency program at the UN Refugee Agency\, providing counseling for newly-arrived refugees. \nHe is currently completing a joint Master’s degree program from Université La Sagesse in Beirut and Université de Paris-Sud in Paris. His thesis is entitled "The Repercussions of the Migration Crises in the West: The Rise of Populism and Its Impact on Multiculturalism." \nAzazi was an active member of the Civil Secular Society Movement in Lebanon and has been a member of NOSHA since his arrival in the United States earlier this year.

SUMMARY:Gimme a Faith - Film Screening at the New Orleans Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:NOSHA is the Community Partner with the New Orleans Film Festival for this film. We will have some free passes to give out to NOSHA people (first come\, first served) and when those are all taken\, you can still buy a ticket at the venue. Look for Charlotte or Audrey. \nSYNOPSIS: Thousands of Chinese students arrive in the United States each year\, often confronting loneliness and culture-clash upon arrival\, something director Hao Zhang (Winner: NOFF Student Pitch Award\, 2017) knows all too well. Arriving in North Carolina to study film\, Zhang is surprised to find a unique community of Chinese students\, underpinned by a newly discovered evangelical Christianity that is often at stark odds with their roots in China. \nZhang follows these students—many of whom become his close friends—as well as lone skeptic Gong\, whose staunch atheism leaves him largely isolated. Self-consciously mirroring Zhang’s own expat journey\, "Gimme a Faith" ponders the importance of maintaining a sense of identity and purpose in a foreign land. \nDocumentary83 minutes

SUMMARY:Sunday Freethinkers Fika - Join Us in September!
DESCRIPTION:"Fika"\, a valued social institution in Sweden\, means taking a regular break to enjoy refreshments with your friends or colleagues. We would like to add that experience to NOSHA! But the essential thing is that you do it\, that you make time to take a break: that's what fika is all about." \nThis is a new social outing from board member William Gautreaux and he will lead the casual discussion. Bring your enthusiasm\, your topics and your willingness to listen to your freethinking friends!

SUMMARY:Climate of Doubt: The Politics of Global Warming
DESCRIPTION:Our film discussion this year will be about the issue of climate science and how it is impacting our lives. "Climate of Doubt" describes the individuals and groups behind an organized effort to attack science by undermining scientists\, and to unseat politicians who say they believe there is current climate change caused by human activity. It's important to remember how this all started and how we got to where we are. \nAnd if you would like to contribute\, please bring one or two non-perishable food items for our monthly donation to Second Harvest Food Bank!

SUMMARY:Postcards Against Kavanaugh -- You can make your voice heard!
DESCRIPTION:Come by and sign a postcard to let our Senators know that you do not support the nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. He has dissented from a ruling upholding the Affordable Care Act which provides healthcare for millions and he has shown hostility to the separation of church-state issues among other valid concerns. \n** Your postcards will be hand-delivered to the Senator's offices by Louisiana Courts Matter this coming weekend. \nThere is area parking in the back lot or on the street. So stop by and sign a card and then grab a drink\, a bite to eat or be on your way... whatever works for you. \nI'll be there until 6:30pm or as long as the postcards hold out.

SUMMARY:The Future of Atheist Activism
DESCRIPTION:We're excited to have Jim Helton in town to talk to us about being activists! Helton is the National Field Organizer for American Atheists. After attending the 2012 Reason Rally\, he co-founded the Tri-State Freethinkers and was appointed American Atheists’ Kentucky State Director. Under his leadership\, Tri-State Freethinkers adopted the highway in front of the Creation Museum and Ark Encounter and led a protest that received international attention. \nHe played a key role in eliminating Gideon’s bible distributions in public schools and removing abstinence-only sex education. \nMr. Helton’s activism at the Creation Museum and Ark Encounter landed him appearances in the 2017 documentary film Bill Nye: Science Guy and the forthcoming documentary We Believe in Dinosaurs. He has been quoted in countless news outlets\, including "The New York Times"\, "Miami Herald"\, and "Washington Post". He is a fixture in local Cincinnati media and has given interviews for international television specials in France\, Switzerland\, and elsewhere. \nAs National Field Organizer\, Mr. Helton works with affiliates\, local partners\, and state directors to challenge religious privilege and fight to protect church/state separation at the local level by building coalitions around specific issue campaigns\, including medically accurate sex education\, LGBT non-discrimination ordinances\, and religious exemptions.

SUMMARY:Secular Coalition for America Presents: Getting Secular Voters on the Map
DESCRIPTION:With the 2018 midterm elections coming up and unprecedented on the separation of church and state by all three branches of government\, we need to prioritize and organize! \nThe SCA's Grassroots team\, Sarah Levin and Sarah Frey are traveling across our region to meet with and mobilize secular groups and individuals. As the largest and fastest growing religious demographic in the country\, secular Americans and our values continue to be underrepresented and outright attacked. \nOur goal is to make sure the secular constituency visible and respected as a powerful voting bloc by legislators. We understand that many volunteers and members of the secular community feel frustrated or think they don't have enough time to contribute to make a difference\, but whether it's registering secular voters\, building relationships with your members of Congress\, or organizing in your political party\, we have a way for you to get involved!
