SUMMARY:Sunday Freethinkers Fika - May
DESCRIPTION:Our monthly Freethinkers Fika is a small\, friendly social gathering for humanists\, atheists\, agnostics\, and freethinkers to engage in free discussion with like-minded others in a coffee-shop atmosphere. \nSecular Humanism is a philosophy that seeks to make sense of the world using science\, reason\, and shared values; we reject attempts to explain the world in supernatural terms. This philosophy forms the basis for our affiliation in NOSHA\, and thus will necessarily inform the perspective from which topics are discussed. \nThe Fika is not a formal moderated discussion or debate; attendees can raise whatever issues they wish to discuss. The only requirement is that we all treat each other with courtesy and respect\, even if disagreements arise. We do want to include everyone who wishes to speak in our discussions\, so individuals are discouraged from dominating conversation to the exclusion of others. Attacks or proselytization will not be permitted. \nWe hold this event in a small private room\, which means space is limited. Therefore\, we ask that you be serious with your RSVP\, and update it on Meetup if your attendance status changes.

SUMMARY:New Orleans Abortion Fund 2019 Bowl-A-Thon
DESCRIPTION:Join the Unholy Bowlers to contribute to the success of the New Orleans Abortion fund. \nFor the seventh year in a row\, NOAF supporters are raising funds\, engaging with their networks\, and busting barriers to abortion care. We're switching venues this year\, but we still want to see your team spirit\, your energy for reproductive health\, and your kickass costumes. \nRegistration and information: bowl.nnaf.org/NOAF19 \n$25 to register to attend\, free for "virtual fundraisers" (people who can't attend but want to do the peer-to-peer fundraising.) Registration includes bowling\, shoes\, food and non-alcoholic drinks. \nTo register:* Visit bowl.nnaf.org/NOAF19\, click "register"* To start a team (3-6 people) - select "create a team." You'll be prompted to select a team name (these can be changed\, no worries!) Then you must actually join that team as an individual as well.* To join a team - select "join a team" and search for your team name. \nYou'll need to be a part of a team in order to bowl\, but if you can't make it or just want to help us raise money\, you can register as a "virtual fundraiser." This registration is free\, and you'll receive the same support as you help us fund abortion! \n**We heard your concerns about accessibility at Shamrock\, and agree. Due to a higher event cost and more limited spaces at Fulton Alley\, we do need to charge a registration fee this time. But we hope you'll use the $25 fee as a chance to kick-start your incredible fundraising for NOAF!

SUMMARY:Losing Earth: Nathaniel Rich in conversation with Tegan Wendland
DESCRIPTION:Author Nathaniel Rich will be in conversation with WWNO Coastal Desk reporter Tegan Wendland about his new book\, "Losing Earth: A Recent History". \nBy 1979\, we knew nearly everything we understand today about climate change—including how to stop it. Over the next decade\, a handful of scientists\, politicians\, and strategists\, led by two unlikely heroes\, risked their careers in a desperate\, escalating campaign to convince the world to act before it was too late. Losing Earth is their story\, and ours. \nNathaniel Rich is a writer-at-large at The New York Times Magazine\, and a regular contributor to the Atlantic\, The New York Review of Books\, and Harper’s. He is the author of three novels: "King Zeno\," "Odds Against Tomorrow\," and "The Mayor’s Tongue." He lives in New Orleans. \nNOTE: This event is not sponsored by NOSHA. It is hosted by the ByWater Institute at the Tulane River and Coastal Center\, and co-sponsored by the Garden District Book Shop and WWNO.

SUMMARY:Religion\, Immigration\, and the Rise of Right-Wing Populism
DESCRIPTION:Fidel Azazi will discuss contemporary immigration in the West from Muslim-majority countries and the dramatic cultural shift contributing to a major change in Europe and the United States. Such change has paved the way for right-wing populism to dominate the political landscape. \nAzazi is a Lebanese social and political activist who has worked with the International Organization for Migration under the Humanitarian Admission Program for resettlement between 2013 and 2015. Then\, he served as a protection officer at Oxfam Great Britain until 2017 providing social safety interventionist programs to refugees. By mid-2017\, he was assigned to a ten-month emergency program at the UN Refugee Agency\, providing counseling for newly-arrived refugees. \nHe is currently completing a joint Master’s degree program from Université La Sagesse in Beirut and Université de Paris-Sud in Paris. His thesis is entitled "The Repercussions of the Migration Crises in the West: The Rise of Populism and Its Impact on Multiculturalism." \nAzazi was an active member of the Civil Secular Society Movement in Lebanon and has been a member of NOSHA since his arrival in the United States earlier this year.
