SUMMARY:Tree-Shrine Ceremony: A Memorial of Great Women
DESCRIPTION:"The woman who follows the crowd will usually go no further than the crowd. The woman who walks alone is likely to find herself in places no one has ever been before." ~Albert Einstein \nAs an extension of the "Spirituality Without Superstition"\, Daniel Lev Shkolnik is inviting the NOSHA community to be part of his humanist ceremony celebrating women. \nYou will receive a candle lantern that you will carry through the night as you visit the altars set up at seven oak trees. Each altar will be dedicated to a different woman from the past. You will find a candle will be burning for her as well as a scroll of paper where you will read about who she was and what made her life such a powerful light to others. \n* The organizers ask that you come dressed in all white and bring an offering of flowers and/or fruit for the shrines.* Also\, they ask that you please shut off cellphones when entering the ceremony space (or simply do not bring them).* Please RSVP so they will have enough lanterns. (Feel free to bring your own candle/lantern.) \nSome of the women are well-known\, others not. Some we don’t even know their names—just their deed. But all of them are women to be respected and emulated for their wisdom and bravery. \nAfter visiting their shrines\, the group will gather in a nearby field to share stories of women in our lives who we would like to commemorate and to eat a light meal of fruit and vegetables by the light of the torches. \nFor more details: https://www.facebook.com/events/674944736284687/

SUMMARY:Spirituality Without Superstition
DESCRIPTION:The presentation will be an exploration of forms of spirituality that use art\, imagination\, and emotional connection instead of belief in energy crystals\, faith healers\, or deities. \nDaniel Lev Shkolnik is a humanist speaker and community organizer interested in creating a powerful spiritual alternative to traditional religions based on humanistic principles rather than supernatural assumptions. \nHe's managed "Another Breed of Faith"\, a column in the nonreligious section of Patheos.com. He's worked under Greg Epstein\, the Humanist chaplain at Harvard both as a speaker and a community organizer. He has given talks at the MIT Secular Society\, the Harvard Humanist Hub\, Seacoast Sunday Assembly\, NaNoCon\, and elsewhere on topics such as the interplay of science and morality\, the celebration of life\, demystifying the mystical\, and more.

SUMMARY:Candle-Light Humanist Dinner
DESCRIPTION:*** Due to the high chance for storms over the next few days\, this event is being postponed for one week.*** \n“Look at how a single candle can both defy and define the darkness.” ~Anne Frank \nDaniel Lev Shkolnik’s next Humanist dinner gathering is going to be a candle-lit affair by the Peristyle in City Park. (the Roman-looking building in the picture). There will be candles\, good people\, good wine\, and some Story Time. \nPlease bring friends and some food or wine to share! \nHe'll be making guilt-free\, gluten-free\, vegan\, hare-krishna style foods (without the chant). Bring whatever you can\, with meat or not—but you'll get twice the brownie points for vegan/gluten free food!

SUMMARY:Sunday Freethinkers Fika - June
DESCRIPTION:Our monthly Freethinkers Fika is a small\, friendly social gathering for humanists\, atheists\, agnostics\, and freethinkers to engage in free discussion with like-minded others in a coffee-shop atmosphere. \nSecular Humanism is a philosophy that seeks to make sense of the world using science\, reason\, and shared values; we reject attempts to explain the world in supernatural terms. This philosophy forms the basis for our affiliation in NOSHA\, and thus will necessarily inform the perspective from which topics are discussed. \nThe Fika is not a formal moderated discussion or debate; attendees can raise whatever issues they wish to discuss. The only requirement is that we all treat each other with courtesy and respect\, even if disagreements arise. We do want to include everyone who wishes to speak in our discussions\, so individuals are discouraged from dominating conversation to the exclusion of others. Attacks or proselytization will not be permitted. \nWe hold this event in a small private room\, which means space is limited. Therefore\, we ask that you be serious with your RSVP\, and update it on Meetup if your attendance status changes.

SUMMARY:Losing Earth: Nathaniel Rich in conversation with Tegan Wendland
DESCRIPTION:Author Nathaniel Rich will be in conversation with WWNO Coastal Desk reporter Tegan Wendland about his new book\, "Losing Earth: A Recent History". \nBy 1979\, we knew nearly everything we understand today about climate change—including how to stop it. Over the next decade\, a handful of scientists\, politicians\, and strategists\, led by two unlikely heroes\, risked their careers in a desperate\, escalating campaign to convince the world to act before it was too late. Losing Earth is their story\, and ours. \nNathaniel Rich is a writer-at-large at The New York Times Magazine\, and a regular contributor to the Atlantic\, The New York Review of Books\, and Harper’s. He is the author of three novels: "King Zeno\," "Odds Against Tomorrow\," and "The Mayor’s Tongue." He lives in New Orleans. \nNOTE: This event is not sponsored by NOSHA. It is hosted by the ByWater Institute at the Tulane River and Coastal Center\, and co-sponsored by the Garden District Book Shop and WWNO.
